Biography: Bin Wang is a full professor of Statistics. He joined the faculty of Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of South Alabama (Mobile, AL, USA) in 2003 after he earned his Ph.D. in Statistics from Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH, USA). He earned his M.S. and B.S. degrees from Department of Information Management and Decision Science at University of Science and Technology of China (Hefei, China). His research interests include biased sampling, measurement error models, survival analysis and bioinformatics. His recent research focuses on next-generation sequencing data normalization and differentially expressed gene detection.

Speech Title: Normalization and Differentially Expressed Gene Detection Based on Large Amount of Next-Generation Sequencing Gene Profiles
Abstract: Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has been widely used in basic research and clinical settings. The demand for NGS clinical applications is increasing with the rapid drop of sequencing cost. We propose a normalization method when a large amount of gene profiles are available. A general gene expression profile and simultaneous confidence bands will be constructed via non-parametric regression with errors-in-variables technique. Differentially expressed gene detection algorithms are developed for genes expressed at different levels. The proposed methods will be benchmarked with some existing methods via applications to a few real datasets on breast cancer, pancreatic cancer and lung cancer.
